Precision Linear Servo Actuators

Specify precision at the point that matters

Precision linear servo actuators should be evaluated against a defined positioning task. Command resolution, repeatability and absolute accuracy answer different questions. A fine encoder increment cannot compensate for an undefined measurement reference, a flexible fixture or a reversing load that changes the output position.

This is a configuration review, not a stocked SKU listing. Ratings, documentation availability, sample scope and lead time are confirmed for the reviewed design.

The first design decision

Which positioning error must stay within tolerance, at what load, direction and temperature?

A useful starting point for

  • Optical and instrument positioning with a defined reference datum.
  • Dispensing, alignment and calibration mechanisms that need a repeatable approach to a target.

Define these boundaries

  • Encoder counts and microstep increments are not statements of system positioning accuracy.
  • Fixture compliance, thermal drift, off-axis loading and measurement uncertainty belong in the error budget.

Agree on prototype acceptance before sampling

  1. 01

    Write an error budget

Allocate permissible error to the mechanism, sensor, mounting and thermal conditions. Keep the required tolerance distinct from a proposed encoder resolution.

  2. 02

    Agree on a repeatable test

Define target positions, direction changes, speed, load and dwell before measurement. Identify the external measurement reference and its uncertainty.

  3. 03

    Check reference recovery

Test homing, power cycling and recovery from a motion fault. Confirm whether the machine can safely re-establish its coordinate system.

Define the inspection and release package before fixing the sample acceptance criteria.

Engineering FAQ

Can I choose an actuator by encoder resolution?

Resolution is one input. Specify the maximum position error at the working point, the load and approach direction, then review sensor resolution alongside transmission behavior, structural compliance and the measurement method.

Is bidirectional repeatability relevant to my application?

It matters when the same target is approached from both directions. If your process always approaches from one direction, state that explicitly and still evaluate how the reference is recovered after a fault or power cycle.

Are micron-level specifications available?

Any numerical positioning commitment must be tied to a released configuration and an agreed test. Send the tolerance, travel, load and measurement conditions for feasibility review; this page does not publish an unverified accuracy rating.
