Brushless Roller Screw Servo Actuators

Integrate the brushless motor and roller screw as one axis

Brushless roller screw servo actuators bring a motor, screw transmission and closed-loop drive into a compact assembly. Their suitability depends on the complete operating cycle. A short peak-force event and sustained loaded motion create different motor, bearing and thermal requirements, even when the required stroke is identical.

The first design decision

Can the proposed motor and transmission deliver your loaded motion profile inside the available thermal envelope?

A useful starting point for

  • Robotic mechanisms with defined acceleration, holding and return phases.
  • Compact automation axes where a separate motor, coupling and screw assembly consume too much installation space.

Define these boundaries

  • A brushless motor does not imply a particular continuous thrust, duty cycle or lifetime.
  • Roller screws require application-specific support, alignment and lubrication review; side loads need a suitable guide path.

Agree on prototype acceptance before sampling

  1. 01

    Supply a time-based cycle

List extension, dwell, retraction and idle intervals with force and speed for each. Include emergency and occasional peak events separately.

  2. 02

    Review the integrated load path

Check axial bearings, coupling or rotor connection, anti-rotation, guides and end stops. Reserve room for the cable exit and service access.

  3. 03

Validate heat and output motion together

Request motion traces and temperature measurements on the agreed mounting arrangement. A no-load demonstration does not verify a loaded cycle.

Define the inspection and release package before fixing the sample acceptance criteria.

Engineering FAQ

Does brushless operation guarantee continuous duty?

No. Continuous operation depends on losses in the complete axis, the load profile and heat rejection. A duty requirement must be tied to a defined ambient temperature, mounting condition and permissible component temperatures.

Can a frameless motor be integrated around the transmission?

It can be evaluated as a custom architecture. Rotor support, bearing arrangement, assembly sequence, encoder space and thermal contact need a joint mechanical and electrical review before feasibility is confirmed.

Should I specify motor torque or output thrust?

Supply the required output force and speed over time, together with your drive constraints. Motor torque is an intermediate sizing result. If an existing motor is mandatory, include its complete torque-speed and electrical data.
